“What’s it like being White today?” Chris Rock asked his friend Louis C.K. Ask yourself that. Ask yourself: “What’s it like being a man today?” Or, “What’s it like being straight today?”
It’s pretty nice…because those are the privileged in our society. For example, “Me, Simone Joyaux…I’m a white, heterosexual, well-educated, affluent woman. I win. Except for gender.” Because it’s an advantage to be white and heterosexual and well educated and affluent. But it’s a disadvantage to be a woman in every country in the world.
Do you examine your own privilege? Do you wonder what it’s like being Black or gay or…?
I pondered all this once again. This time while driving and listening to Terry Gross’ Fresh Air on NPR. She was interviewing Louis C.K.
