| Personal opinion instead of body of knowledge |
| I've complained about this before! |
"This is what we know. So let's not talk about it." So says Joanne Sciulli, Founder and Executive Director of Solar Youth. She and her board use that phrase to set the context and avoid useless chatter. I love it! You're at a board or the fund development committee meeting. "This is what we know: face to face personal solicitation is a very effective way to raise money. So let's not talk about whether it's true or not. It is true. Experience and research proves it. Instead, let's talk about how to use this strategy here in our agency." Try the phrase with your CEO, your board, your committee. "This is what we know." And throw in why we know it if you think that's helpful. Then say, "So let's not question the veracity. Let's not talk about personal opinion. Let's focus on body of knowledge. And then let's figure out the implications for our agency and our strategies. Let's identify the barriers to implementation and overcome those and move forward. Of course, you better make sure that you really know it; that you're using good information and research. You best know the body of knowledge or find it before you say, "This is what we know."
